What to do on New Year's Eve: programme and events
When one thinks of New Year's Eve in New York, the most famous event that takes place every year in Times Square immediately comes to mind. The city, however, offers many alternatives for spending New Year's Eve with fun and special people.
1 - New Year's Eve in Times Square
First of all, it should be pointed out that the event is totally free, the main difficulty being to manage to grab a good position to be able to follow it satisfactorily. It will be necessary to 'sacrifice' oneself and try to be present from the early hours of the afternoon: once you have entered the transennaded spaces, in fact, you cannot move, at the cost of losing your place! So take into account the cold, the lack of services and food, and the presence of a truly oceanic crowd. At 11.59pm the world-famous coloured and illuminated ball begins its descent from the top of the One Times Square building, as does the countdown to the New Year.
2 - New Year's Eve in Central Park
Also very popular is the party that takes place in Central Park, where at midnight a fireworks display lasting about 15 minutes is staged. This event is undoubtedly suitable for those looking for a much more relaxed atmosphere than in Times Square, and especially less crowds. To get to the big city park you can use the underground, staying up to date on schedules and possible closures close to the start of the event. Nearby there are some fairly cheap restaurants where you can have dinner and then head for the park. From the same area of Central Park, the NYRR Midnight Run starts every year at 11.59pm, dedicated to running enthusiasts who want to enjoy the wonderful fireworks while running.

3 - New Year's Eve Yacht and Cruise
If you really want to forget the crowds, the public transport, the difficulties in finding a taxi and the cold, the alternative for you is one of the New York Bay Cruises. The evening will undoubtedly be special, with dinner, music, dancing and fireworks lighting up the Manhattan skyline at midnight. There is a wide choice of possibilities, from cruises for the young - decidedly informal and with DJ sets, dancing, drinks and light snacks at very reasonable prices - cruises with a buffet dinner, to the more elegant but also more expensive cruises.
