Spending New Year's Eve in New York is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

With its parties, dinners, illuminations that colour the city, and skating rinks, the city is even more fascinating.

You will be spoilt for choice of things to do, there are parties, dinners, galas and one of the most famous New Year's Eve parties in the world: the ball drop in Times Square. But let's take it slow and see how to celebrate New Year's Eve in New York.

There is one piece of advice to follow and that is to buy your plane tickets well in advance as it is the peak season, there will be (thankfully) no shortage of last-minute bargains and offers to grab.

New Year's Eve 2023 in New York

If your wish is to spend midnight in Times Square, you should know that you won't be alone: every year about one million people await the historic event known as the ball drop, which sees a huge glowing ball (about three and a half metres big) covered with 2,688 crystal triangles falling from a height of 23 metres onto a pole positioned on top of the One Times Square building.

At Rockefeller Park there is another big party; in the park you can watch the famous Liberty Island and New Jersey fireworks display.

As an alternative to New Year's Eve in the square and city parks, there are clubs and restaurants that organise events and dinner. Be prepared to spend a lot though. Here is a list of events not to be missed in New York.

Times Square

New Year's Eve in Times Square has been a city tradition since 1907; ever since then, the 'New Year's Eve Ball' has been flying over the heads of the millions of attendees who flock under the world's most famous Christmas tree.

It is recommended to reach Times Square well before midnight, preferably in the early afternoon, before the square is cordoned off (usually around 4pm). Be prepared to spend many hours in the cold and crowds before the midnight show.

New Year's Eve on a Cruise

You can spend New Year's Eve on a cruise. Boat tour operators offer tailor-made programmes with food, drinks and fireworks.

A seat on board will guarantee an extraordinary view of the Statue of Liberty surrounded by fireworks and a wonderful view of the southern tip of Manhattan. A list of cruises to try can be found at this link.

Central Park

Another popular New Year's Eve party is the one celebrated in Central Park where at the stroke of midnight you can watch a 15-minute fireworks display.

It is definitely a favourite choice for those who do not like crowds and prefer a more relaxed atmosphere.

In New York City's most famous city park, the more sporty can participate in the customary Emerald Nuts Midnight Run organised by the New York Road Runners. But even if you don't feel so sporty Central Park will be ready to welcome you with music, costume parades and fireworks.

Prospect Park

If you want to celebrate New Year's Eve in Brooklyn, we recommend the fireworks display at Prospect Park.

On New Year's Eve, Brooklyn holds a big party at Grand Army Plaza, the perfect alternative to Manhattan's chaos.

A fireworks display will light up the sky above Long Meadow, the large clearing in Prospect Park, for fifteen minutes.

Concerts and Shows

It's the perfect night to catch a live show performed at one of New York City's best venues. From Lincoln Center to the music venues of the Lower East Side, you'll be spoilt for choice with the great concerts and shows taking place on New Year's Eve.

Coney Island

Fireworks also at Coney Island, which is however famous for the plunge into the Atlantic Ocean organised by the Coney Island Polar Bear Club to celebrate the arrival of the New Year.

Rockefeller Park

Quieter but still cost-free celebrations take place at Rockefeller Park.

In the park's greenery you can admire the fireworks display of Liberty Island and New Jersey. From Astoria park, on the other hand, the view is excellent for enjoying the fireworks over Brooklyn and Central Park.

Rooselvelt Island

If there are two of you, it's not a bad idea to greet the arrival of 2022 in the intimate and romantic tranquillity of Roosevelt Island. You get there by cable car from the intersection of 59th and Second Avenue.

Once on the island, a nice walk looking at the East River is full of magic and undoubtedly cheap.

New Year's Eve Bike Ride

Another alternative for sports enthusiasts, this time on two wheels, is the New Year's Eve Bike Ride that starts in Washington Square Park and goes to Belvedere Castle in Central Park. A cheerful and festive ride that is completely free of charge and culminates with festivities with music and costumes in Central Park (better get organised and bring your own food and drink).

Venues and Parties

The events and venues in which to celebrate New Year's Eve in New York are of course many and it's not easy to choose. Lovers of classical music and spirituality cannot miss the famous organ at St. Bartholomew's Church, which starts at 11pm, as it does every year, its wonderful symphony on the notes of Bach, Vivaldi and other great artists of classical music.

The coolest and most expensive venues are on Broadway and Soho, the most elegant are on the East Side Manhattan. Chelsea is also elegant, while Hell's Kitchen, MidTown, the Bronx and Williamsburg are more active and alternative.

If you like jazz in the city that has always been devoted to swinging notes, you are spoilt for choice. The Blue Note is recommended. For Soul there's the Bell House in Brooklyn. The indie mecca is the Mercury Lounge (217 E Houston). District36 and Webster Hall for those who prefer a club.

New York New Year's Eve tips

One of the most important tips for enjoying New Year's Eve in New York is undoubtedly the advice regarding clothing.

It is advisable to dress appropriately and in a manner commensurate with the cold without being afraid to overdo it and without avoiding technical and sporty materials in order to look good for New Year's Eve.

The advice is especially valid if you are celebrating outdoors, but also if you are going to a club where you need to dress in layers because it can be very hot inside. You can find all the information about the weather in New York in December here.

Another useful tip is to get to the places where you intend to celebrate New Year's Eve outdoors early in the afternoon, be it Times Square or New York's big parks.

Also to reach clubs and restaurants it is advisable to move well in advance, perhaps spending the afternoon in the same area where you have decided to celebrate, thus avoiding traffic congestion.
